fullsizeoutput_18d3At one time I did steam a caken an Insta pot, this recipe intrigued me because no wheat based  flour is involved and fermented rice is used. A coconut from the superstore was also on hand.


Ingredients ready the coconut juice will be used in place of water. the cooked rice is a brown variety

What happens when you try to connect a 2S battery to a 1S powered drone. A faster more responsive vehicle ? No,  a smoked transistor! What does happen to these small components is that it isn’t exactly smoked, it popped right off the circuit board, nowhere to be found.

So I would take a chance, to practice my soldering skills and replace the transistor.  I went online and found the transistors, 20 of them for 95 cents USD . A small quantity seeing that most quantities start off at 100 pieces. They arrived and they are miniscule, here compared to the old school through hole transistors days past.

Now the repair.. the 2nd from the left of the row of transistors, also had to fashion a wire to replace a section of the copper trace that was burnt off the board. Not to mention I used a 600 power  microscope  to see and clean up the board before soldering. Not real expensive microscope for it’s functions and potential, but working with  boards that will require soldering headers or wires and repairs it makes it easier to see than balancing a Ipad and using that as a magnifier.


Now for the test ??????????… ……………………………………….. flight again !


The old UDI unplugged version, is a favorite flyer and even though just a toy, a good test to repair and modify props and get some basic flying skills in, other power modifications  such as using a bigger power source such as a 2S power LIPO through a 5 volt BEC (voltage regulator)  which did not work. This is the goto drone for flying and testing as I have numerous 1S batteries for use.

Flight Controller; Programming and Calbration

Buying this flight controller some time ago, the progress in flight controller development  is swift. One could devote all their time to just the software and programming of these microprocessors rather than flying drones. Support for some of these boards can drift in and out of favor.  When working with an open source project it also may lose support , that being the software required to calibrate, program and adjust the flight controller. You can go the YouTube , Google it route, for advisement but the reality that I have found is that you  eventually get the system to connect and function without getting into specifics like boot loaders and compatibility ,Yes you can get on the internet merry-go-round to get solutions from videos and forums, but some are cryptic without results or merit. I found that DRonin flight control ground station, a GUI based program, is compatible with the CC3D board. Even using different platforms , a Macbook versus Windows machine didn’t produce the same results, windows would work but the Mac version of DRonin didn’t.  The big boys heave the obsolete hardware and move on but me being the stubborn variety , (HACK IT)  will get it to work even though to some it’s a miniscule amount of money involved. (generally I buy and build by the piece by piece method and tackle it when the mood strikes), I’m often late the party. That’s why I have probably 10 different GCS packages on different computers.

Building Alpha1 first as a test bed, the frame is basic and the wiring is complete enough for testing. A 2S battery provides power for testing and short power ups. A 4 channel Sunfounder receiver and TU transmitter is used to test the input to the flight controller. Once it is tuned, I’ll clean up the wiring and build up chassis  and add enhancements. 6 channel reciever, transmitter, video, transmitter etc.



One more try with the Libre Pilot Ground Control Software . After reading a few more notes from online sources, with no power, shorted the boot pins, and connected the USB cable to the flight controller. Boot loader did it’s thing and reflashed firmware. Rebooted and was able to use the Librepilot system. Next with a circular bubble level on the chassis, made sure it was properly level. As you may take this for granted that your bench or desktop is level. (similar to a basic configuration of any machine surface, you want to calibrate that the bed is level, thus accurate readings of the sensors on the flight controller).

Now the battery that was used for the test flight and bench top configuration was woefully under powered as the drone did not react properly only lifting off several inches. Soldering up some connectors for a larger battery capacity type and fastening it on the underbelly provided the final piece to the puzzle. Hover time and maneuvering test completed. One prop blade snapped.




Soda bread, Irish 

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 and 3/4 cups dairy products 

Heat the oven to 400 degrees fairenheit and breakout the 12 inch cast iron skillet.

Sift together the dry ingredients to a large bowl and rub in the butter. Rice flour ? One cookbook suggest that a addition of a lighter flour will lighten the loaf. That is your preference to flours used in the recipe.

The dairy products vary, I don’t have buttermilk so about 1/4 cup whole milk yogurt , a teaspoon of white vinegar and the rest whole milk to equal 1 and 3/4 cup total. Basically a diary sour product for the reaction to the baking soda. If possible let the liquid sit at room temp to sour and separate  a bit.

Well the dry mixture and add about 1 and 1/2 cup of the dairy mixture. Bring the flour and liquid together with a fork, if necessary add additional liquid so there is no dry spots in the dough. Form up a 6 inch ball and tuck the dough under from the edges to make a craggy top loaf.  Or, smooth out and cross cut the top if desired. Place in the skillet and bake I watched mine and when the top began to brown lowered the oven temp to about 370 degrees before it hit the 20 minute mark. About another 15-20 minutes would finish the loaf.

Rinse out the pint glasses, don some green and let the loaf cool from the oven about 20 minutes. Serve the  ale and pass  butter and the bread. Each diner quotes a famous Irish Limerick. “There once was a …………. Who …..”

pasta with spicy tomato sauce (all’arrabiata)

Pasta and sauce, there are countless recipes, yep just boil up some pasta and throw in a can or bottle of sauce your done !

OR…. Start some sauce early in the morning and tend the pot all day !

Strike a balance with this recipe , quick and easy, some prep involved but the time is worth the effort in the finish. No meat is involved so it could be served as a side dish as well.

Pasta with spicy tomato sauce



  • IMG_38951 lb pasta, penne
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper flakes
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 3 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
  • 1 and 1/2 cups tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup chicken stock
  • 4 tablespoons romano or parmesan cheese

In a pot of water under cook the pasta by 2 minutes


In a large pan (big enough to hold both the pasta and sauce) heat the oil and add the red pepper flakes IMG_3898






…..add the garlic cook a minute or two  Add 2 tablespoons of the parsley to the pan, stir well.






Now add the tomato sauce and stock, bring to a boil and stir for 5 minutes.




drain and add the pasta


……and continue to cook till almost all the sauce is absorbed by the pasta.


Off heat add the grated cheese and stir to incorporate.IMG_3908

Plate and garnish with parsley and grated cheese.


Red pepper heat is as much as you add to the recipe. Reminds me of a traditional american chop suey recipe as the pasta is cooked in the sauce. As a personal note this is to me actually better served cold, once refrigerated, eaten from a tupperware type container later in the evening. 🙂

Chicken Curry

From Food 52 Meera Sodha’s Mum’s Chicken Curry

  • A spicy chicken dish , I scaled the recipe in half and used 2 chicken thighs , bone in with the skin.
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter and 1/2 tablespoon oil (canola, olive etc.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 , 1 and 3/4 inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 large onion finely diced
  • 1, 1 and 1/4 inch ginger root, peeled and grated
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 fresh chilis, green
  • salt
  • 3 or 4  oz strained tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoon yogurt, plain whole milk
  • 1 lb or so chicken, the thighs are had were large so two we close to 1 lb
  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoons ground almonds
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

No surprises here, this is  similar to a braised dish and no marination or browning of the chicken is required. As always if you measure and prep the ingredients, the recipe goes easy.


I found these plastic sheets for cutting at the local Job lot, inexpensive and easy to clean plus the diced ingredients can be funnelled right into the pan. Cumin seeds are on the order list, none in stock so I used ground cumin for the saute step.

So in the butter and oil sputter the cumin seeds and cinnamon. Add all the onion and cook till very golden, low medium heat, 10 to 12 minutes. Pound up the chilis and ginger and garlic in a pestle to a course paste, very fragrant ! Add it to the onion mixture. cook for additional 2 minutes.


Now add the paste just cook the following a few minutes layering the ingredients.


Now go with the tomato paste , ground cumin, turmeric, salt to preference and whisk in the yoghurt, cook till heated through. IMG_4516 Add the chicken. IMG_4520

Lid the pan and slow simmer about 30 minutes or until the chicken pieces are done. Finish with the final addition of the ground nuts and garam masala. Flat breads or rice is a good side.


Tomato is the dominate flavor with a spicy finish not too hot. The curry is rather thick and towards the end of the recipe before the chicken was added, I added additional water. Its may be due to the fact or store bought yogurt is thick with no liquid.

I would probably go with more ginger and garlic, but with these many individual flavors additions, it also depends on the quality and freshness of the spices and herbs utilized that could affect the ratio and your preferences.
