vortex revisited

Now that i have had use of the oven for more than 3 months, is it still a useful device? Has it been delegated to the back of the cabinet or other room storage ?

There are many uses for the vortex air fry oven , now that the hot weather approaches, the idea of using a regular gas or electric full size oven in the kitchen can be avoided by using this smaller oven in an another room that is not air conditioned. The most difficult is planning the portions to fit the size of the oven. Usually cooking for one or two persons anyways the biggest challenge was to find cookware to fit the ~10 inch by 10 inch oven. also if needed the bottom drip tray can be utilized so that you can have a 3 tray capacity if the height of the food is small enough to fit the spacing of the racks.

Do you really need a bread baking machine ? I was considering a bread baking machine set up in the storage room to alleviate the use of the main oven during the summer. I found one of the bread pans that fit the vortex and used the proof function. The maximum you can set it for is 40 minutes. You may be able to set it longer on a oven setting at 90 temperature for a longer time. While it works the proofing function is really not necessary. I can still use my regular oven with it’s pilot light flame it’s at about 100 degrees. The ambient air temp is also suitable for the proofing. Mixing the dough is not a huge advantage with a bread machine. I have scaled back the recipe for the size of a 1 pan loaf that i use in the vortex. 330 flour grams to 265 water, 3/4 of a yeast measuring spoon, a bit of salt and mix with a silicone spatula, cover and let rise, or for a single rise, place the dough in the bread pan. Let rise and then bake in the oven. really no need for another appliance. Just watch the top of the bread tends to brown more than a regular oven because of the location of the heat source.

Dehydrating, yes, it works but you have to get used to the limited surface area available. Made some candied fruit peels and dried some spent grain for beer brewing.

Toast function: not so good, first batch of toast too light, best to let the oven preheat ( it doesn’t automatically indicate preheat and add food in toast mode as it does in other modes). Alternative would be using broil function. If you really need a toaster, than it does work as one and best results would be to flip bread.

So far the rotisserie (basket) is the air fryers best advantage for air fry potatoes and roasting veggies.

Summary: The size is both an advantage and a short coming depending on it’s use and meal prepared . The appliance performed flawlessly operations provided that you use portions and cooking vessels that fit the small cavity. Best suitable for usually 1 or 2 person servings. Small enough to carry and use in in different household locations. Could be utilized as a full oven in a space limited kitchen. Rotisserie is a plus with the basket option. The super hot convention is a easier alternative to deep fat frying.

Most preset functions can be modified, remember your only changes are to time and temperature. Placement of the food , especially when using 2 racks and flipping gives better results for even cooking.

The irrigation system was upgraded from last year as the capacity was increased from 5 to 10 gallon , 2 five gallon buckets were joined by tubing, One bucket with a submersible pump on a timer for early morning watering is connected to the irrigation tubing and water is dispersed to each plant . Liquid fertilizer is added as necessary also the ability to utilize rain water collection is available.

Most suckers are pinched from the tomato plants for best results and height of plantings
